Dr. Mark Bernstein is currently Head/Chief of the Department of Pediatrics at the IWK Health Center/Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine.  He was formerly the head of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.  Before coming to Halifax in 2006, he was head of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Ste. Justine Hospital and the University of Montreal.

He works with the international Children’s Oncology Group and other research networks on clinical trials to determine optimal dosing and the most effective combinations of chemotherapy drugs for young people. He is also past Chair of the Atlantic Provinces Pediatric Hematology Oncology Network (APPHON), which is continuing to improve a system to deliver care to children and adolescents with cancer and serious blood disorders as close to home as safely possible.

In addition, he is past Chair of the Management Committee of the Cancer in Young People in Canada registry, which is developing a uniform database for treatment and outcome surveillance for young people diagnosed before their fifteenth birthday.  The database will be useful for both clinical and research purposes.

Dr. Bernstein’s interests are in cancer clinical trials in pediatric populations and de-centralized health services delivery.  He is involved in several professional organizations and is an Honorary Member and Senior Scientist of Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute (BHCRI), was the Chair of the BHCRI Working Group and has served as a member of a BHCRI Scientific Review Committee.
