Vaginal Cancer - Symptoms and Signs

Precancerous conditions, such as VAIN (see Introduction), and early-stage vaginal cancer do not often cause symptoms in the early stages. Cancer in later stages can cause symptoms. Many cases of VAIN and early vaginal cancer can be found through regular gynecologic examinations or Pap tests (see Diagnosis).

People with sarcoma may experience the following symptoms or signs. Often, the only sign that there is a problem is that body part containing the tumor will get bigger or there will be pain. Sometimes, people with these types of tumors do not have any symptoms. Or, the cause of a symptom may be another medical condition that is not cancer.

People with small bowel cancer may experience the following symptoms or signs. Sometimes, people with small bowel cancer do not have any of these changes. Or, the cause of a symptom may be another medical condition that is not cancer.

  • Blood in the stool (feces)

  • Dark/black stools

  • Diarrhea

  • A lump in the abdomen

Changes in the size, shape, color, or feel of a mole is often the first warning sign of melanoma. These changes can occur in an existing mole, or melanoma may appear as a new or abnormal-looking mole. The "ABCDE" rule is helpful in remembering the warning signs of melanoma:
