Doctors are working to learn more about carcinoid tumors, ways to prevent them, how to best treat them, and how to provide the best care to people diagnosed with this disease. The following areas of research may include new options for patients through clinical trials. Always talk with your doctor about the diagnostic and treatment options best for you.

New treatment approaches. Currently, many clinical trials for carcinoid tumors are studying new drugs and drug combinations. This includes the approaches of targeted therapy and immunotherapy as described in the Treatment section.

Genetics. As outlined in the Risk Factors section, family history of MEN1 may play a role in an individual’s risk level for developing a carcinoid tumor. Researchers are investigating MEN1 to learn more about this hereditary risk.

Supportive care. Clinical trials are underway to find better ways of reducing symptoms and side effects of current carcinoid tumor treatments in order to improve patients’ comfort and quality of life.
