The Cancer Policy Today is issued on a bi-weekly basis, providing updates on cancer research, quality care, and Medicare. The Cancer Policy Alert is issued on an as-needed basis when an important development has occurred in one of these areas. ASCO's Progress in Cancer Timeline: In 1971, President Richard Nixon declared "War on Cancer." At that time, treatment options for most cancers were extremely limited, and scientists knew very little about how the disease grows and spreads. Now, nearly 40 years later, research advances have transformed the way cancer is prevented, detected, and treated, and cancer had become a much more survivable disease.
