Support for coping with cancer comes from different places, such as family, friends, other people with cancer, support groups, interactive websites, and health care professionals. Many young adults with cancer find that they need different kinds of support throughout the cancer experience.
Talking with family and friends. Talking with someone you trust, such as a friend, teacher, or religious advisor can help you sort out what you're feeling and thinking. Remember that your friends and family can be some of your best supporters.
Talking with other young adults with cancer. Other young adults with cancer may share your fears and concerns. In addition to offering emotional support, they may be able to offer suggestions for balancing school, work, and/or family life and talking with your doctor. Check your hospital or treatment center for support groups for young adults with cancer, contact local branches of national support organizations for local support groups, or visit other websites for young adults with cancer.
Connecting online. The Internet can be a great tool to connect with other young adults with cancer, through message boards, chat rooms, or online support groups. Sometimes people find that communicating online is easier than talking in person, especially if you're discussing something that may be difficult. Be careful about sharing personal information, such as your name, address, or telephone number online.
Finding professional help. Even if you're getting support from your family and friends, a professional counselor, social worker, or therapist can help you talk through your feelings about cancer. Most hospitals and treatment centers have counselors and social workers that are trained to help young people cope with cancer. Ask your doctor to recommend someone who has experience in working with young adults with cancer.
Writing it down. Writing can help. Some write about thoughts, feelings, and dreams while others may write stories or poems. Consider creating a special journal or notebook just to record your experiences. Read the Cancer.Net Feature: Finding Comfort Through Journaling for more information.
