Cancer Advances: News from the 2003 ASCO Annual Meeting

A Word From The President

Dear Friends,

Improving the treatment and care of people living with cancer has been at the heart of ASCO's mission since the Society was established 39 years ago. In recent years, ASCO has enhanced its commitment to people living with cancer by formally expanding its mission to include serving not only its members' informational needs, but the informational needs of patients as well.

Cancer Advances is a series of consumer information resources designed to help inform people of the latest advances in cancer research. This issue of Cancer Advances: News for Patients from the 2003 ASCO Annual Meeting is designed to provide people living with cancer the latest information about cancer research, prevention, care, and treatment presented at the 39th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. This year's meeting was held in Chicago, Illinois, from May 31 to June 3, 2003. The theme of the meeting was "Commitment. Care. Compassion. Honoring People with Cancer."

Every year, advances in cancer research bring us closer to our goal—the eventual eradication of cancer. I hope you find this newsletter helpful in understanding and communicating the recent progress that was reported at the 2003 ASCO Annual Meeting.

Sincerely,

Paul A. Bunn, Jr., MD
ASCO President
