In general, leukemia is the most common childhood cancer. AML is the second most common form of leukemia in children, after acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) [3]. About 500 children and in the United States are diagnosed with AML each year. Childhood AML is most common during the first 2 years of life and during the teenage years.

The 5-year survival rate tells you what percent of children live at least 5 years after the cancer is found. Percent means how many out of 100. The 5-year survival rate for children with AML is 65%. However, the survival rates for AML vary based on the subtype [4].

It is important to remember that statistics on how many children survive this type of cancer are an estimate. The estimate comes from data based on many children with this cancer in the United States each year. So, your own child’s risk may be different. Doctors cannot say for sure how long any child will live with AML. Also, experts measure the survival statistics every 5 years.
