Your Plan to Quit

When considering whether and how to stop tobacco use, you may find it helpful to honestly evaluate the following:

  • Whether you want to quit
  • How soon you can set a quit date
  • What is stopping you from quitting
  • Your fears about quitting
  • What caused you to start smoking again, if you have quit before, and what you can change this time to help you quit for good
  • How to work with your doctor or other health care team member to put a plan in place to quit

To begin working on a plan to quit with a health care team member, you may want to start with the following steps:

  • Talk with your doctor, nurse, or other health care professional about stopping tobacco
  • Set a quit date
  • Call a quitline and/or enroll in an online program for stopping tobacco use
  • Ask about medications that can help people stop using tobacco
  • Ask for help identifying and removing triggers that make you want to use tobacco
