Food and Cancer Risk

Some foods and the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients found in them may raise or lower cancer risk. Researchers have been studying how the foods, nutrients, and eating patterns listed below are related to cancer.

Plant-based foods. These foods contain naturally-occurring substances called phytonutrients. Examples include:

  • Carotenoids, or carotenes, found in red, orange, yellow, and some dark-green vegetables

Fecal Occult Blood Tests

The fecal occult blood test (FOBT) is used to find blood in the feces, or stool. An FOBT finds blood in the stool that you cannot see. Blood in the stool may be a sign of colorectal cancer or another medical problem, such as an ulcer or polyps. Polyps are growths that develop on the inner wall of the colon and rectum.

Anemia

Anemia is when the level of red blood cells in your body goes below normal. When you do not have enough red blood cells, different parts of your body are not getting enough oxygen. As a result, they cannot work the way they should and cause problems.

You can develop anemia if your body does not make enough red blood cells or destroys them. You can also develop anemia if you lose too much blood from your bloodstream. Anemia is a common side effect of cancer and many types of cancer treatment.
