In addition to serving as an Associate Dean and Director at Lafayette College, and Director and Founder of the Journey Home, a re-entry program for the incarcerated in Northampton County Jail, Bonnie Winfield, PhD, thinks of herself as an artist and art therapist, a mother and grandmother, a drummer, and a sociologist.

While going through a year of treatment for HER2-positive breast cancer, Bonnie says that practicing expressive arts provided her with an outlet for the array of emotions she was experiencing. One of her pieces of artwork, Transformation, is featured on the September-December 2011 page of the 2011-2012 Expressions of Hope calendar.

“This particular piece expresses my movement from before I knew I had cancer on the left, to the discovery of the cancer cells, to treatment, and beyond,” says Bonnie. “The bright colors and movement between sections by the open lines creates a sense of continuity between before, during and after. The final color lines indicate the sense of hope and continuity of life that grows from the past.”
