Growing up as a dancer, Alberta Jaramillo has always used various artistic media to express herself and bring joy to others. After a knee injury landed her in the hospital, unable to dance, she turned to drawing and painting.

Towards the Dance Hall, featured in August in the 2011-2012 Expressions of Hope calendar, was created for Alberta's uncle, a five-year survivor of prostate cancer, to depict his beloved hometown in New Mexico. “Seeing a vivid depiction of his hometown brought joy and a sense of well-being to his life,” she says.

“In this fast moving world we live in, I like to give a sense of calm and peacefulness through the paintings I do of rural towns,” says Alberta. “I like to capture a simple way of life when folks baked bread for their families and canned their own fruits and vegetables…days when people helped each other and everyone knew each other. A painting of a rural town brings back memories of who we are and where we came from.”
