Diagnosed with Stage II/III breast cancer in 2007, Virginia teacher Cynthia Hawkins says she “used the healing arts (music, dance, massage, and visual arts), family, friends, and belief in God almighty to stay alive!” She is “grateful to God and health insurance,” and is now pursuing her love of art to earn certification in art education.

Her photo From Sunrise to Sunset, featured this October in the 2011-2012 Expressions of Hope calendar, was taken with at the National Harbor in Maryland. “I was enjoying the late afternoon with some friends and became aware of an awesome sunset,” she says.
