Caring for Older Adults with Cancer: Geriatric Perspectives

ASCO Educational Book Podcast Series
December 1, 2015
Cat Snyder, ASCO staff

In this podcast, Heidi Klepin, MD, MS, interviews Miriam Rodin, MD, PhD, and Arti Hurria, MD, about the principles they follow when caring for older adults with cancer. They highlight using geriatric assessment to better understand age-related factors and individualize treatment. By considering general nutrition, ability to handle daily activities, and co-existing conditions, doctors can more effectively suggest treatment.

Geriatric oncologists are doctors that specifically treat older adults. While this specialty may not be available at your cancer center, it’s important to ask the doctor about the unique considerations that may affect cancer care for older adults.
