If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, you will interact with a number of different members of the health care team at various times during treatment. When you walk into a doctor’s office, hospital, or cancer center, you may encounter nurses, physician assistants, social workers, doctors—the list goes on. In this series, we talk with some of these health care professionals to learn more about their jobs and the role they play in providing high-quality cancer care.

Oncology social workers support patients, families, and caregivers who are dealing with cancer. They provide coping strategies, direct patients to other resources, or help them navigate tough communication issues with family members or doctors.

In today’s podcast, you’ll hear Iris Cohen Fineberg, PhD, MSW, ACSW, OSW-C, and Penelope Damaskos, PhD, LCSW, OSW-C, discuss how social workers help patients get holistic care in partnership with the rest of the health care team. They provide some great insights on how to find oncology social workers, even if they aren’t automatically a part of your health care team.
