Themes in Improving Supportive Care for People With Cancer: 2022 MASCC Annual Meeting

The 2022 Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) Annual Meeting was held June 23 to 25 in Toronto, Canada. This meeting brings together supportive care professionals from around the world to discuss new research in helping people with cancer manage the side effects from cancer and its treatment.

In this podcast, Maryam Lustberg, MD, MPH, the 2022 President of MASCC, discusses 3 key themes in supportive care, also called palliative care, presented at this year’s meeting.

  • A discussion around the disparities that exist in access to supportive care for people with cancer in the United States and around the globe, and what is being done to address these disparities. [2:12]

  • Insights on how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the delivery of supportive care to people with cancer and the rise of telehealth as a result of the pandemic. [4:05]

  • A discussion around the increase in clinician burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic, how this impacts patients, and what solutions have been proposed to address clinician burnout. [6:07]

Dr. Lustberg is the director of the Center for Breast Cancer at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center, the Chief of Breast Medical Oncology at Yale Cancer Center, and an associate professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine.
