2019 ASCO Annual Meeting: Caring for Every Patient, Learning from Every Patient

Monica M. Bertagnolli, MD, FACS, FASCO, 2018-2019 ASCO President: Hi. I'm Monica Bertagnolli, President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Patient advocates share a common goal with ASCO: addressing the needs and concerns of people with cancer, and helping to accelerate progress.

Whether you operate from an individual or an organizational level, locally, nationally, or internationally, we support your efforts, and are committed to providing you with opportunities to learn, network, and collaborate.

We understand that your participation in the ASCO Annual Meeting is integral to your work, and we are thrilled that about 450 patient advocates attend the meeting each year.

ASCO: May 31-June 4; Chicago

Dr. Bertagnolli: I hope you'll join me May 31st to June 4th in Chicago for this year's premiere event.

2019 ASCO® Annual Meeting: Caring for Every Patient, Learning from Every Patient

Dr. Bertagnolli: The 2019 Annual Meeting theme is "Caring for Every Patient, Learning from Every Patient." At the very center of this theme is, of course, people with cancer: how can we better care for people with cancer as patients and as survivors is the focus of everything that we do.

At the ASCO Annual Meeting we offer special programs and opportunities for advocates. Through the Conquer Cancer Foundation we have been providing scholarships since 2007, helping advocates cover some of their attendance costs.

You'll have the chance to participate in several educational sessions and small discussion groups that take place on-site in our Patient Advocate Lounge. The Lounge is a place where advocates can gather for these special sessions as well as for networking purposes.

This year we are excited to collaborate with the Research Advocacy Network in providing research advocacy training for patient advocates. This new program, called Focus on Research, will consist of online webinars and special on-site sessions with medical experts and fellow advocates.

Make sure to use Cancer.Net before, during, and after the Annual Meeting to access detailed patient-friendly summaries, videos, and audio podcasts with leading experts.

I encourage you to attend the ASCO Annual Meeting to gain the education, knowledge, and skills necessary to your work as a patient advocate. And I hope to see you in Chicago.
