This section explains the types of treatments, also known as therapies, that are the standard of care for melanoma. “Standard of care” means the best treatments known. Information in this section is based on medical standards of care for melanoma in the United States. Treatment options can vary from one place to another.

Melanoma - Diagnosis

Doctors use many tests to find, or diagnose, cancer. They also may perform tests to learn if cancer has spread to another part of the body from where it started, such as imaging tests, which show pictures of the inside of the body. If the melanoma has spread, it is called metastasis. Doctors may also do tests to learn which treatments could work best.

Melanoma - Follow-Up Care

Care for people diagnosed with melanoma does not end when active treatment has finished. Your health care team will continue to check that the cancer has not come back, manage any side effects, and monitor your overall health. This is called follow-up care or surveillance and monitoring.
